What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with training, which allows individuals to earn while they learn, whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications. Most of the training is delivered in the workplace, with an element of 'off the job' training which usually takes place with a training provider or at a college. If your son or daughter lives in England, is over 16 and not in full-time education he or she can apply.

The core components are:
  • A nationally recognised vocational qualification
  • Functional skills, such as working in teams, problem solving, literacy and numeracy, communication and using new technology
  • A technical certificate such as a BTEC or City & Guilds (relevant to your specific apprenticeship)
  • Other professional qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular job
The benefits of an apprenticeship
  • Earning a salary whilst receiving all the benefits of being an employee including: holiday pay, profit share, discounted bread shop on site etc
  • A range of apprenticeships with training that focus on the skills employers like Warburtons are looking for, in areas such as Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies, Business Administration and Information and Communications Technology
  • Excellent career progression opportunities through additional training and skills development
  • Better long-term salary prospects (those with an Advanced Apprenticeship earn around £117,000*, more than those without, over the course of their career)
  • Learning at a pace suited to the individual with the support of a mentor
  • There are three entry points through the different levels: - Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (Level 2) - Advanced Level Apprenticeship (Level 3) - Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4 or above).
What level of salary can an apprentice expect to receive?

The current National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices is £5.28 per hour, but we pay more than this. Salaries vary for different apprenticeships, but our starting salary is typically £19,000 per annum, depending on the role, which will rise as the apprentice progresses.

Entry Requirements

If your son or daughter lives in England, is over 16 and not in full-time education they can apply for an apprenticeship. There are different entry requirements depending on the type of apprenticeship they wish to pursue. Apprentices need to be committed, motivated, enthusiastic and reliable, with a 'can-do' attitude. We'll also look for apprentices who share our values of Quality, Care, Responsibility and Family.

Duration

Apprenticeships last for a minimum of one year, however many can take longer, especially if they are at a higher level or in certain sectors such as Engineering. The duration of the apprenticeship will be made clear at the beginning of the application process.
